Ground Zero Newsletter

Osu all,

Once again thank you for taking time and checking out our first newsletter post. So much has happened over the past few weeks we could spend days talking about it.

Who we are:

Sensei Martyn Watt: Martyn Watt, 1st Degree Black Belt in Kyokoshin Karate and 2nd Degree Black Belt in Fudo Shin Ryu Karate is offering free training for the month of November. Martyn and I met when we were about 8 yrs old, Martyn doing Karate and me doing Judo in the same gym and have been best mates ever since. From drawing fight pictures in the back of school books to kicking, punching and choking the hell out of each other we have been been through it all. Martin, while not that flexible and flashy ( mostly due to a broken hip speed skiing) he knows his stuff and is a smart, cunning fighter who will train you hard while instilling the heart of Karate in all those who persevere.
Martyn has undergone the uchi dechi program at Young Lions Dojo and has been the student who helped prepare Sensei Tadashi Honma for the South Pacific tournament against Kyokushin Karate wounderkind Garry O'Neil.

Stan Rozjimaline:Having been raised in Russia, Stan started Kyokushin Karate in small town named Kazan under the IFK group in 1991 when karate was considered an illegal sport. Since moving to Australia in 1998 Stan has changed groups and has lived full time and trained at Young Lions Dojo, Melbourne with instructors from Russia, Japan, Brazil, New Zealand and Israel.

We have finally implemented structure to our training and now have systems in place to accommodate all levels of fitness and expertise in martial arts experience. My team and I specialise in improving general fitness, developing skills for stand up and ground work via martial arts training of Karate and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Specialising in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Kyokushin Karate, Ground Zero programs and training sessions will help you develop your fitness, strength, stamina, physical co-ordination, assertiveness, balance, mental agility, flexibility and self-confidence. Contact out instructors via email to enquire further about training programs, training schedule and private classes on gzkyokushin@hotmail.com.

We are at Level 2, 373 Little Bourke, Melbourne every Saturday from 2pm onwards. Come in and take a look around. We would love to welcome you into our Ground Zero family.

For those who are fan of Dr. 90212 you maybe aware that Dr. Robert Rey is now in Melbourne. Dr. Rey has studied the martial arts for seven years, training almost daily in Aikido and Tae Kwon Do. Recent episodes of Dr.90212 show the Doc taking up BJJ.

"KARATE IS BACK!" - Lyoto Machida, the UFC LHW Champion

With all the Machida Karate talk lately it seems many MMA fans think that the art of Karate disappeared from MMA entirely after Harold Howard's fairly disappointing run back in 1994. Even Machida himself proclaimed that Karate is "back" right after he captured the LHW belt. Was it ever "gone"? You decide.

I present to you a list of successful Karate fighters in MMA (no particular order):

1. Lyoto Machida

2. Bas Rutten

3. Guy Mezger

4. Chuck Liddell

5. George St-Pierre

6. Semmy Schilt

7. Sam Greco

8. Andrews Nakahara

9. Frank Mir

10. Ryuta Noji

11. Vitor Belfort
